Frequently Asked Questions

About the Explore Program

1.  How are students chosen for Explore?

Students are rotated in an out of Explore classes based on a number of factors which may include but are not limited to standardized test scores, composite scores, report card grades, teacher/parent recommendations, previous program participation, current student in-class work, a high level of interest or knowledge in a specific unit of study.

2. What will my child be missing in class?

Since the students are pulled out of their classes, they will be missing some classwork.  Many teachers do limit the new content taught during this time or give students time in class later to complete the work, however the students may have additional work from their classrooms they will need to complete at home.  Students are responsible for the content they miss while they are in Explore classes.

We work hard to ensure that Explore classes do not overlap with any of the specials.  While we try to avoid interrupting recess time, occassionally it is unavoidable that the students miss a recess.

3.  How are students graded?

The Explore classes are not graded, but the teachers do communicate about observations of student acheivements in Explore.  The goal in Explore is for learning to be fun and challenging and for the learning itself to be its own reward instead of just for the grade.

4.  Is there homework from Explore?

There is no homework required for the explore program, but occassionally optional fun challenges or extensions are given for the students to do at home.
